Moseying for a Put-In

posted by Francis Ho

What do kayakers do on the weekends when they are on land and not on the waters? They drive around looking for rivers and suitable put-in places for the next weekends!

So come early Saturday morning, Joe and I headed north of Kuching in search of river nirvana but not before we had fortified ourselves with Kuching ‘kueh chap’ (all you vegans please don’t ask me what it is – trust me, you don’t wanna know!) at Foochow Road No.1. We would have about a week’s holidays during the Chinese New Year period and would like to find new places to kayaks on the days we can ‘sneak off’.

At Kg Selebat we found traditional wooden boat builders and tried to order a sampan but it’s at least a 3 months waiting period and even then; it’s only if the builder can find suitable wood from the jungle to make the boat. I like this. Like a true artist, he would not be rushed, so we’ll have to check in with him in another month’s time to confirm this before he would commit. I wished my practice was that busy.

We also went to Kg Senari, Kg Jernang, Kg Goebilt, Kg Muara Tebas and Kg Pasir Putih and by lunch time we managed to find three suitable put-ins; thoroughly thrilled that we would mostly likely to be the first people to dip paddles in these waters!

Now we can hardly wait for Chinese New Year! 'Tong Tong Tong Cheng!"

Here are some of the photos I took during the recee. Looked promising doesn't it? Cheers!

goebilt is a good place to kayak bcos u can launch the kayak right from the jetty. however i see some dangers... especially for the uninitiated. 1) the tidal flow can be strong!!! 2) a lot of BIG vessels pass-by and they do create BIG waves!!! 3) plenty of smaller vessels also ply the rivers!!!
Wah.. good good good.. more Bak Kua coming your way, in anticipation of my next coming.

The river looks so quiet and definitely much cleaner than the one behind our houses.

hmmmmmm... got King Prawn there too? >)
mangrooveDan - aiyo! not even on d waters yet n u so worried oledi! :) dun worry dis unker will guide u all safely across!

robin - bak kua!! good! good! good!
we r pretty sure there are King Prawns there too! but on d flipside; Big Prawns means there r also BIG CROCS!! heeheeheee!

Haiyo, wilson, not only Ms Siau and Ms Siow, you'll get Mr Siau and Mr Siow calling you now.

fh20, always consider the flip side for the snap! bite! But you know better. The places look lovely. I like the reflections of the sun and wooden structure. I bet the water lilies turned out better than you expected eh...and the country road looks like a scene near brandywine river in Lord of The Ring. Where Frodo and friends first encountered the black rider.
agus - d 1st pic is my favourite. glad that u liked d rest of d pics too. for an overcast day d pics turned out pretty well. i'm happy w 'em. hope i had not posted too many of 'em!

FH2O: Please forward Wilson's wrong number to me :) see i told you that you are younger - I am totally restricted from taking Kueh Chap due to certain high contents in my blood....must exercise like you one of these days...I used to take those Kueh Chap at Pasar Sg maong across Sunny Hill - they say that's the best place. Now you are recommendin the one in Foochow Rd? Got picture of that nice stuff?
fh2o,

Great pictures as usual. Can you put the map Joe was looking at on the Blog? I love maps and it would be great to follow your adventures on the map.

btw, do you take requests? Have you guys paddle from Kuching to Batu Kawa or vice versa along the Sarawak River? I have often dream of doing that. May be you can do that for me sometime ... with lots of photos of course.

Also, I am thinking of buying a kayak the next time I am in town. Can you get them in Kuching? What sort of budget should I set aside? How about some closeup pics of your kayaks?

Cheers
edison - ok kiddo here's d lesson 4 d day : "put-down" - something unker say to edison in zest! u r gud fun!! ;p
"put-in" - place where you can launch your kayak onto the waters in relative ease and safety.
"take-out" - place where you can get out from the water in relative ease and safety especially when u r completely whacked from hours of paddling!

desmond - better not simply post edi's number lah. ping would not appreciate that!
generally i don't take or post photos of food, drinks blah blah lah. plenty plenty n plenty of other bloggers doing just that! it would also be a non-halal posting! i very respect other people's religions and sensitivity one! :p
hi batukawa! good morning! u jus posted after I had replied to the other 2 guys!

yes i take requests all the time (like a deejay)! thats how i got know Joe in d 1st place (he emailed me) and a few of d others. Joe has from d onset suggested that I post maps as well n d only thing stoppin me was d availability of high quality maps n my limited time and space for each post. I try to keep my post(s) 'snappy'. will bear that in mind for future.

the Sarawak River is d least appealing river for me 2 paddle! but it's still nice. i had paddled all d way to batu kawa solo as there's a stretch at paroh (caged fish farming) where d local crocs sunbathe! also near batu kawa! d water n d banks r quite muddy in dat locale as well. its quite a thrilling paddle actually knowin that our reptilean frens are closeby! ;P

pl email me so that i can give u my contact no for u to call me with rgds 2 info on kayaks.

will do a posting on my kayaks (5 at the last count!) dis year! and Happy Chinese New Year to you and family!
FH2o, enjoyed the adventure, oops! I mean e-adventure. Thanks for sharing. It's still the same tune.....all that mud!! Yikes!
