Waiting for the boatman on a lazy sunday afternoon ...

posted by Francis Ho

While kayaking with Joe yesterday morning on Sg Bayor, we spotted an easy put-in opposite Kg Paoh Penyo where there was a small wooden jetty and I decided to check it out – this time, by car.

After crossing Sg Jernang or is it Sg Jerenang (there were 2 signs there) I reached the jetty where there was a family waiting in the shed for the boatman to take them back to their kampong across the river, Kg Penyo; which houses approximately 100 malay families. Here are some snapshots of a means of riverine transport in Sarawak that has essentially remained unchanged for a hundred or more years.

Incidentally the boat ride across Sg Bayor will cost you exactly 30cents. But if you hop on in my kayak, it will be absolutely free!

In comparing the cost of this "ferry" service (30 cents) with your kayak offer (free), one must also calculate the odds of completing the crossing with all fingers and toes still intact.

chomp..chomp...chomp....
panda - as you well know, in life, there is no such thing as a free lunch (unless u r the croc) nor a free ride!

Ur photos are in B&W....purposely?
Dear Pandabonium, you are so, so wise. I will pay the 30 cents - in advance if they'll let me.

FH2o, your offer sounds inviting - thanks but no thanks.

hahahahaha.............
jungle mike - the lazy sunday afternoon made me too lazy to turn on the colour mode ...

happysurfer - hmmmm looks like i'd need a yacht to get this lady on board ... (sigh)
So there is no similar picture in glorious technicolor? I was just about to ask about them and hope you'd post them up. 'A timeless scene of Sg Bayor' is no doubt stunning, but that just makes me want to see the color version. Will I be disapointed?
agus - at yours and your bird's service sir ...
Wow! fh2o, you are indeed a titanium kayak. You shouldn't have. Now I know you hate to disappoint. And I must say it looks glorious. Thanks, my bird is joyful.
agus - u r welcomed and remember to keep that 'bird' of yours on a tight leash! And keep munching on the sandwiches (Thoughts Number 8) ...
I doubt if they let u run services there...

you need to be licenced (typical Singhaporean speaking)
robin - hello? hello? wat talking u? this is malaysia boleh! everything also boleh!
