Please Switch Off Your Handphones!

posted by Francis Ho

Lovely Peggy as chairwoman of the Sarawak Music Society most kindly invited me to a concert “From West to South East Asia”, a guitar recital by Peter Korbel (an accomplished German guitarist) with Sons (Simfoni Orkestra Negeri Sarawak) String Orchestra at the MBKS Auditorium last night.

And guess who else was playing in the orchestra last night? It was none other than Ben, our ever smiling music student on the violin viola as Peter Korbel’s left hand man! (Actually Ben was on his left hand side!)

Conducted by Marcus Leong with an interesting repertoire; the performance was fine if not stirring. But what was really stirring (and grating) one’s temper were the handphones that kept going off throughout the evening’s musical performance. Perhaps the MC was 'deaf', as whilst she waxed lyrical about the performance, but made no mention of this annoyance after Part 1 of the concert nor was there any announcement that all handphones should be switched off or put on silent mode during the concert! Duh!

Despite the rude interruptions; it was a successful and enjoyable evening.

Do people really have no cow sense at all? This is one ‘other side of the story’ that I do not really care to listen. If you are attending a concert or movie – can you please just SWITCH OFF YOUR BLOODY HANDPHONES you inconsiderate morons! What’s a stupid cow doing in a concert anyway?

StumbleUpon Toolbar Stumble It!

This Ben so talented sigh wish my 11 year old gal can play the violin too like the exotic thai gal Vannesa then me rich lady
W(^O^)W .....

But she sings like a nightingale just needs some coaching.

Kuching also have ugly inconsiderate handphonkers ?
Yup.. I know exactly how irritating it is because of those inconsiderate people who are not turning off their hp. I guess that show how "kampungan" those people are.

Any possibility to listen the concert? or to watch the video?
The Gracefulness of a society is expressed in events like these.

It is a norm for anyone to switch off their handphone or put it to silent mode when entering any concert, cinema, meeting, class and fine dining.

Graceful People who carry handphone should be fully aware (and not forget) about this practice, otherwise there are just a group of low-class moron who deserve no attention in the first place.

In Singapore, such person will be escorted out of the concert hall immediately!
29 April 2006... hmmm.. it is a Saturday :)
robin - even graceful people needs to have their glasses or heads examined! hello? 29 March was a Wednesday! :)

'What’s a stupid cow doing in a concert anyway?'

hey all, please support our Sarawak Music Society. Sign up for the free online membership at http://www.sarawakmusicsociety.org/ for updates on upcoming concerts. Feel free to browse around ya? Hey, Francis, thanks for the free advertisement space ... hehehe ...
Wow, nice. wish I got the free ticket.

Haha, too bad you were grossly irritated by the cowly-phonic ring tones. In cinemas they tell you to turn off your phones; some people need to be reminded to be considerate. I guess they don't do that in concerts.
There have been attempts to sell jammers which would nullify the signals to handphones within a small area, such as a theatre of concert hall, but in the US they have been found to be illegal. If I knew how to build one, I would sneak it into the concert in my coat - legal or not! I hate those bloody things.

Glad you had the opportunity to hear some great live music. Always a treat.
walao!! this unker!! gimme pressure summore~!!! i already so stressed out liaw neh! :X on 29th i am playing violin liaw~ no more viola` whahaha
a^ben - take it easy kiddo! juz pulling your leg lah! juz be yourself and u'll do just fine! :)

... n if u do screw up, i'll promise not to blog it! so there! hehe! ;)
At my school's senior high graduation two weeks ago there was one jack-ass whose cell phone rang about every ten minutes (during a two-hour ceremony). He would always stand up and start his conversation (loudly) as he walked out of the auditorium...disrupting the speech or whatever else was going on at the time. You'd think that, after the third or fourth time this happened, either the principal would stand up and tell the moron to get a life or the people sitting next to him would confiscate his phone and grind it into a few dozen tiny, little pieces...

Jammer? Heck, I want someone to adapt Star Trek technology and develop a device that'll make any cell phone activated within its radius burn up!

Viola! Great instrument! A German violin mastercraftsman once told me that viola was the only instrument that nobody played by choice. Actually, I started to learn it intended to play it with our community orchestra. Then, before I got far enough to rehearse with it, I was asked to stick with clarinet.

That sounds like a great concert...minus the cell phones, of course!

you know wat other irritating things you can do at concert? make sure to wrestle with ur plastic sweet wrappers, or cough every once in awhile, or shift in ur seat so the people behind you can also syncronise shifting in their own seat according to the position of the head on ur neck, or keep the phone sms alert on and make sure to keep taping away, or have a really small bladder and keep goin to the toilet, or have running commentary or joke about how lousy or boring the concert is to ur neighbours in the middle concert, or whisper loudly about your life story to your friend during the concert, or eat jiuhu (sotong) ... watever lah ... all listed above are also applicable at movie theatres, please try!
littlemisspiggy - eating jiuhu (sotong) is not noisy ler! smelly yes but not noisy ... unless they are slurping 'em!! yucks!

concert halls, movie theatres ... and churches? hehe ;)
panda - jammers I like but I love moody's 'cellphone vaporisers' even better!
