On Saturday morning, we (Laura,
Ivan, Bev and yours truly) set out on an overcast morning to look for dolphins. This is the first trip for Laura and
Ivan and as beginner’s luck would have it – we spotted dolphins within half an hour on a delightful calm and cool morning on the bay.

My hand phone rang and an excited Wayne was on the other end eager to know whether we had spotted dolphins already or not. Wayne was coming with a group of people on a motorized boat and before too long they were also at the same spot with us enjoying the sights of the frolicking dolphins!
Ivan was thrilled to bits as was Laura and we were still high when we had our lunch at Buntal Village when we got out of the waters around noon time. Read about Ivan’s account at his blog on “Dolphins Meet Kayaks”. Hmmm and I was thinking that the dolphins wanted to meet us the kayakers!

Stumble It!
flaneur - hahaha! friday is not too far away! ;)
catch a dolphin & tell me how it taste like..
ahahaa dolphins !!!
Unker must take me go see them when i go back to kuching !!! Arrghhh...
robin - yes of course! then we can feed the remains of Wuching to 'em! heehee! ;)
I wonder if Wuching is a fan of the Shockwave game "Torpedo Joe" by Joe Cartoon...
Incidentally, famous (notorious?) conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh once said that people who criticize gill-net fishing because it often kills dolphins are stupid. His point was that superior intelligence was no reason to value dolphins more than tuna.
Hmm...if that's true, maybe we should start throwing some people into those nets...
And im still smiling from it! Unker must take robin for his own virgin kayak trip.Awesome man
moody - wuching has yet to cross paddles w Bev; and I'll let her handle him then! And if we were to start throwing some people into nets, let's start with him!
Sibu would still thrive with one less foochow ... heehee ;)
ivan - our trips are not strictly restricted for 'virgins' only! ;) *ahem*
Glad that you enjoyed the trip! :)
Wah.. more dolphin..
Up close and personal... huh?
robin - yes! they're getting closer and closer!
I thought so too that they are getting closer or rather people are getting closer to them as in probably encroaching on their territory? I hate to spoil the fun but is there a possibility of them going away (what with your weekly trips, motorized boats and such)?
MM, that's a good one - that superior intelligence was no reason to value dolphins more than tuna.
happy - the irrawaddy dolphins had been there for many years and 'interacting' the local fishermen for the longest time by taking the by-catchs that the fishermen threw into the waters as an easy meals. the kayak are the least intrusive and most eco-friendly as there are no propellers! they only leave behind wakes and the dolphins can easily leave us in its wake as kayaks are slow moving compared to everything else on the waters! guidelines for dolphins watching are being drawn up now to regulate some of the more irresponsible operators on motorised boats - they have been seen to 'chase' dolphins. (see wayne's blog for details).
being the intelligent mammals that they are, they'll naturally move away if they're being disturbed or threatened! believe me - being on the kayaks are no threats to them whatsoever. u'll have to get on one to understand what I mean! ;)
I disagree with that shock-radioDJ that MM mentioned. I value the dolphins more than the tunas or salmons! Otherwise we'll be of less value compared to d orang-utans! ;)
FH2o, thanks for the enlightenment. Glad that it's not a threat to them. It would be such a shame not to have them on our shores.
If caught in a net, I'm sure humans would be released over orangutans. ;)
happy - hmmm although with certain humans u may want to release the orangutans instead! ;)
I will cheer the dolphin fans from the shore....I have this problem of having an uncotrollable panic streak when i see things in the water alsmost as big as me....its a phobia actually.
