Mad Monday

posted by Francis Ho

I had the shock of my life when I returned a missed call on my hand phone to a number I did not recognize just before I head out of the door for the office. The voice who answered was perplexed when I identified myself and asked who’s looking for me.

“We are waiting here at the hotel since 7.30 a.m. for the Dolphins Watching Trip pickup and its 8.00 a.m. already!”

It was Lai from KL who has booked this trip more than a month back for him and his adventurous friends. I’ve got his date mixed up with another booking from a fickle-minded group from Singapore who kept changing their dates.

And so I had to rush to get out of my office wear and quickly load up the car with the required kayaking gear; while sorting out my other appointments for Monday on my hand phones. I normally drive fast so you can imagine the fear in the eyes of other road users this morning at the sight of this car strapped with 3 kayaks on top weaving through morning rush hour traffic.

Lai, Shirley and Praned were gracious despite being kept waiting for over an hour and I promised that I’ll make it up to them somehow. This is the first time I had ever been late for any appointment as I hate to wait so I do not like to make people wait for me.

After picking up Azmi along the way we reached the beach just in time to see the rain coming down and the wind whipping up whitecaps on the water. This is turning into a nightmare of a Monday. Wendy who came along but not kayaking asked to be dropped off at a nearby beach resort while Lai and gang took up on my offer that we go kayaking through the rainforests instead.

After dropping off Wendy and on the way back we decided to take another look at the beach as the rain and wind has abated somewhat. And indeed it had and as Azmi and I quickly rushed to untie and unload the kayaks, I watch a smile breaks on Lai’s face!

To cut a long story short, despite the rain and the overcast weather, we saw lots of dolphins today! And Lai, Shirley and Praned had dolphins’ smiles when I treated them to a seafood lunch at Buntal Village to make up for my shoddiness. What a day!

Harlo..this is Lai 'die-&-gone-to-heaven' of KL. :)

Fyi Wuching, Francis has done a great job. We have no compaint but recommendations for everyone to experience kayaking with dolphins, right in our country's open water.
As with all outdoor activities, hiccups/incidents do happens and it always good to set some expectations. Truer when it comes to nature. It is never in our control.
As we the slight mixup in his schedule, we were still on schedule and in fact, have buffered it heavily by having our flight late in the evening.

** While waiting for him @ Singgahsana, 6 busloads of kindergarden kids stop next to the building. Massive traffic jam in Kuching! hehe. (No thanks to the lane closure on the other side due to pipe repair). The sight of these little friends r one of the memorable event during our Kuching trip.

On the other hand, for things that is within our control, then we shouldn't let our guards down. For example, as reported in today's The Star, that students & teachers that stranded in mt. Santubong. We met them on our way down and did advise the teachers to have a cut-off time in order they can return back before dark. BY 1pm, many still reach only two-third of the climb. It is obvious the group have no sufficient experience in mountaineering, not fit for the climb and not prepare to handle such a large group (95 students!). Needless to say, all they need is one student with leg cramp and they all gain instant fame the next day.

Back to dolphins, personally, i wouldn't expect discount or free meal, whether sighting dolphins or not. Francis did offer a good alternative, that is to take the rainforest river kayaking in Bau if the sea condition's not safe. And even if it rains in Bau, i will tell Francis, just postpone the trip till my next return. In the end, it is the dolphins that i want to see and nothing will hold me back except myself :)

Cheers!
FH2o, great job on customer service!
Ahh.....I wish I didn't have that shoulder injury! Francis, you could've offered to kayak me out and I sit behind doing nothing! Hehehe.....

I could see the happiness and excitement when all 3 of them came back to Singgahsana. I was about to leave then coz my flight was earlier.

I promise, my next trip to Kuching, I'm going out there into the sea.

Oh well, anyway, I had quite an adventure all by myself. Hopping from one beach to the other via the free hotel shuttles where Francis left me and enjoying that massage at the hotel. Ended up in the Ranforest Resort when this guy emerged from nowhere while I was on the beach taking pictures. He was indeed the Rainforest Resort owner and he took me for a tour around. I had my free lunch as well!

Thanks to you Francis for dropping me at the right spot. I enjoyed my day as well! I shall see you the next time I go to Kuching for that dolphin tour.
dilvin - thanks for your understanding and most kind thoughtful words.

happy - thanks!

w.e.n.d.y - hi! didn't realise u've a blog and didnt realise you were tagging along with Lai n gang.
