Tattoo Man @ Kampua Mee, Sibu

posted by Francis Ho

Visiting Sibu and not eating the kampua mee there is like visiting Kuching and not trying the kolomee here (or taking the rainforest kayaking trip … *ahem!*)! Kampua mee though similar to kolomee differs in texture, the way it is cooked and that vinegar is not used.

So when I arrived early morning in Sibu and after checking in at the downtown hotel and with some time to spare before my appointment; I quickly went in search of this famous Sibu noodle to satisfy my stomach and taste buds. I spotted this busy coffee shop and promptly ordered a bowl and sit back to take in the sights, smells and sounds of Sibu.

I was slightly taken aback when this gruff and intimidating looking heavily tattoo man came towards where I was sitting with a bowl of the kampua mee. He would not look out of place in a gangster movie and certainly not one you would want to complain if the kampua tastes less than palatable! But it tastes great and while savoring this simple and humble dish; I couldn’t help but stare at his tattoos as he goes from table to table serving and clearing the plates.

Finally I garnered the courage to meekly ask him if he minds if I take a closer look at his intriguing tattoos. He didn't and proudly told me that he had it done in Thailand. He seems more friendly than he looks and I decided to ask if I could photograph his amazing body art and he promptly obliged! So here are the photos and ‘Mayang’ (that’s what he told me his name was) if you happen to see this blog; I hope the photos do you justice! I would like to be able to come back to your stall to enjoy the delicious kampua mee and not get 'kampua-ed' by you! And thanks for allowing this kay-po Kuching guy to blog you!

Wow...that must have been one long, excrutiating experience! No wonder Mayang is eager to show it off! He must have a strong character.
That's a very nice tattoo. It reminds me of the design on the exterior of the big urns that hold salted eggs.

Any picture of the kampua mee?
wuah! sibu pai kia!
It reminds me of that Ray Bradbury story "The Illustrated Man".
yep, Thai scriptures on the Dragon Sutra.
