Doing your Laundry
posted by Francis Ho
We are so used to just throwing our washings into the washing machine, pour in the detergents/softeners and pressing a couple of buttons to get our laundry done; that it is quite a surprise for us city folks to see washing being carried out by the rural village folks the eco-friendly and communal way on a river. When was the last time you chatted with your neighbours when doing your laundry?

Post a CommentI think it's more like the washing machines chatting among themselves while we go about our activities.

You mean chatting with strangers while waiting to collect the silk blouse from the dry cleaner?
Doing laundry has never been such a scenic, foot-cooling experience for me before.
Stupid question from an ignorant Ameri-kan: do they use soap when they wash in the river like that?

iml - they'll certainly think u're strange! :)
mm - i've seen them using brushes and old fashion soap cut from a long bar (u dont find those in supermarkets). but i have also seen bottles of laundry detergents alongside but have not seen too much suds so they must be using them very sparingly for the hard to clean stains. i'll 'linger' just a bit longer to take a closer look next time ... ;)

This reminds me of a town in China that has the river running through it and they use the water for different purposes at different elevations, e.g., the water at the highest point would be used for consumption while the lowest level water is used for washing. Neat idea and has been like this for centuries. It is now a tourist destination though the town's name escapes me right now. Anyone?

hmm.. in the laundry room in the hostel, people also chat as their washing machines (coin operated) do their laundry.
