How To Pick The Best Durians

posted by Francis Ho

As a fanatical lover of durians, I had over the years honed my skills on how to pick good durians and now I’m going to divulge one of the best kept secret to picking the best durians you are ever going to taste and for which are going to be grateful that you are reader of this blog! It is easy and no skills are required.

Here is the secret – the best durian has a hole in it! Specifically a hole made by squirrels who like me absolutely loves durian that they would take the trouble to chew through the tough thorny exterior in order to get to the delicious flesh. To go through all that trouble the squirrels would obviously only pick the best fruit amongst the various trees and then from that particular tree, the best fruit there. The durian picked by the squirrels has the best taste and the most flesh.

Incidently yesterday morning we didn't find any durians on the river nor did we manage to buy them at the village but as the truth goes that 'seek and you shall find'; we did when we bought some from an old man in his wooden boat with 2 baskets full who was on his way back from his farm, when we took a swimming and brunch break by the sandy banks.

And luckily for us the squirrels are small eaters and would only touch a portion of the pod leaving us the opportunity to savor the rest of the fruit. So who says small creatures have small brains and big creatures have small appetite? Whatever; now go pick and enjoy your durians and eat slowly and unlike me in the wide open outdoors, do not burp in confined spaces/places!

You might get gastro-entiritis from eating such fruits as the squirrels mouth will introduce all kinds of germs into the fruit not least to say any fruit with a big opening on the outer is an open invitation to bacteria, fungus, germs, dirt and become risky to consume... Dont let this idiot poison you!
wuching - yes, there are other ways n methods to pick durians but they require skill and time.

Anon..what's your problem?!
Anonymous, if you have a point to make, do it in a positive and friendly manner. You don't have to be abusive. But if you really want to pick a fight, you should have the guts to leave your name, address and telephone no.! So far you really comes across as a coward.

Batukawa, "anonymous" is a very typical, garden-variety troll. He is here for one thing, and one thing only: to try to prop up his flimsy ego by getting off on the sense of power he gets from attacking people. It's no different from people who write abusive graffitti on restroom walls or children that do obscene phone calls against people they don't know. It's all just so they can sit there smugly and think, "Ha ha! You can't do anything about it! I am invincible! MEH!!"

Ignore him and he'll go away.

Hey Uncle Francis! Nice place u got here ;)
Squirrels are amazing. Watching them dig through a pile of walnuts, they will occasionally toss one aside without cutting it open. When you crack one of these discarded ones open, it will be rotten inside. How do they know which ones are bad?
Those durians kick-ass. Yum, yum...
ahfeiko - wah! we have another durians connoisseur here! :)

chen - yes we're lucky to still have durians! :)

sam - thanks and welcome, welcome!

richard - i suspect that they must have a very acute sense of smell. either that or squirrel ESP! ;)

sisuahlai - haha! they sure do!
D24. :-)
I agree. (Hi-5, YD)

D24 anytime. Nothing else even comes close. Period.
yd and happy - i beg to differ! I'd tasted D24 and thought it was great ... until I tasted the naturally grown durians; especially d ones picked by d squirrels! ;)

hey! someone has a profile pic now! sweet n cute one too! :)
Francis.... am still waiting for your reply re: durian taste. :)
selba - soli, soli!!

to me they tastes much better as the taste(s) of the thai durians are predictable and tend to be too sweet.

each and every durians here have their own very unique tastes and texture. some are dry while others are 'wet'. some are sweet while others are 'bitter sweet'. the texture varies from fruity dry to rich creamy.

i very much prefer them to the thai variety.

like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're gonna get! :)
Thanks Francis!!!

So far, I only know 2 durians which are Durian Monthong and Durian Medan.

Durian Medan has big seed, very thin flesh, yellow colour kinda like dark yellow crystal.. watery... not really sweet.

I prefer the Durian Monthong :)

If I have a chance to visit Kuching, definitely it's a MUST to try your kind of durian!
