Kelong Fisherman @ Bako

posted by Francis Ho

I paddled to Bako this morning with Kelvin who knows (and have done) all the walking trails intimately at the Bako National Park but was viewing it from an entirely different perspective - from a kayak and he was thrilled. But he was not so thrilled after the trip with aches on the arms and shoulder! You would be too if you have to paddle all the way to Tanjung Rhu and beyond.

We came across this fisherman working on one of the 'kelongs' (fishing net traps) there and I took a few quick snaps as this is the first time that I have actually seen any fisherman working on it. I get to see something new or different everytime I go kayaking and I LOVE IT! Aches and pains if any are minor considerations and are worth it!

soooo....that's what kelong means! All this while whenever I go shopping for fish in the market with my mum, the fish mongers will always tell her the fish were kelong caught. Never knew what on earth they were talking about.
