To Paddle, Risk, Live & Grow

posted by Francis Ho

I choose to kayak alone at the beginning of each year to self-examine, reflect on and to remind myself to always seek the things that makes life alive, meaningful and significant. How else is it to live but this; or perhaps someone can be kind enough to share with me their wisdom and insight(s) on this our journey through this life. This means exposing myself to things or situations that are or maybe risky and painful but I believe that the only way to extend one's limits is to exceed them. Otherwise we would have a limiting life with limited understanding and experiences. That would be a waste.

And there is beauty in the most mundane and dire; if only we open our eyes and hearts to them. I take decent enough pretty pictures not because I have the best camera nor am I a better photographer but rather I think, because I'm a better and more alert observer than most; and I 'see' with my heart. In otherwords I 'feel' as well as see. I know that to the uninitiated, I really sound corny but how do you explain the difference in the aesthetics of the same 'mundane' subjects of water, trees and skies? Perhaps certain things can only be understood not explained.

I think it is however a greater risk to give up - and grow old. I know as a lot of much 'younger' people or people my age, are much 'older' than me are and that; frankly, frightens me! Old in thoughts, enthusiasm, fun, joy, learning and acceptance of new ideas and concepts; shunning rather than embracing differences, life and humanity. To 'die' before one even begin to 'live'; that I frequently wonder who really is the 'uncle'. *sigh*

Have a great and meaningful year ahead and do not grow old before your time!

Kayak and dogs are like soup and sandwhich they go together...throw in a nephew, niece, son, daughter or any body else who appreciates a slow rolling clear creek or a big fat muddy river...it doesn't get any better. Seems that the kuching kayaker kickin the new year off right! This is Slowjohn sending a brother paddler a little peace and love from the Keystone State USA!

Thank you for the words of wisdom and your reflection on life from a better angle. Its true, no motter how much wealth one can acquire, nothing can buy universe's acceptance and inner peace. May u find lotsa blessing and valuable life experiences in 2007.

Hamilton RG, Kuching!
Hey Francis!

My name is Sophia and I'm currently a student at UNSW. I'm looking for a housemate (preferably from Kuching) to share a house near Maroubra Beach and figured I'd try spreading the word through the Kuching blog community. It's particularly suitable for students from UNSW since that's the nearest uni.. if you know of anyone I'd really appreciate it if you forwarded my e-mail add. Thanks much. Cheers!

I envy your being able to do that. I used to go on long solo hikes and/or drives for the same reason, but nowadays I can never seem to make the time...or get away from those that would shackle me to a social wall...
Slowjohn - thanks for that nice greeting all the way from the keystone state USA!

Hamilton RG - thanks for your kind words and since you're in Kuching, perhaps I can take you out for a paddle one of these days? feel free to contact me as i'm partial to good coffee (and durians) and company. ;)

Sophia - that's my own Uni! hope you find your housemate soon!

mm - don't worry. it'll be one day soon!
