Kuala Lumpur's Taxi Moral Police

posted by Francis Ho

The haji taxi driver and his sign.

I was a bit taken aback by this professionally printed sticker in the Kuala Lumpur taxi I took from Sental Station to get to my hotel.

My bahasa Malaysia is really terrible at best but it roughly translates as “Please Behave. Do not kiss/cuddle/fondle inside the taxi”. For those who have a better command of bahasa; please correct me if I am wrong - but I think I've got the gist of it.

This perhaps reflects either the loose morals of Malaysians these days or the growing intolerance of the Muslim on the behavior of others who are construed as being not as pious as them. But kissing is misbehaving? Road safety is a better reason if taxi drivers are voyeurs.

It’s just as sign, I am travelling alone and it provides fodder for me to blog about other than kayaking, skies and other lame stuff. Whatever. So just don't be too perturbed if you are a honeymooner who just got into taxi in Kuala Lumpur with a sign like this!

Dear Francis,

A Muslim is enjoined to enjoin good and forbid evil.

This is a Commandment from God Almighty and the taxi driver just happens to be a Muslim who abides by God's ruling.

A taxi is a public transport and not a private limousine like in the West where morality is ancient history.

Our Asian values traditionally call upon us to behave appropriately when in public especially unmarried couples.

Even married couples aren't allowed to fornicate or indulge in heavy petting in public, in any society that still has a bit of decency left.

As a Christian, you must remember that we aren't that different in our values as we share common respect and adherence to our Creator save for the matter of Jesus Christ Al-Masih being taken as the Son of God in your belief whereas to us Muslims, Isa bin Maryam is a noble Messenger of God.

Learn to appreciate a good call like that sticker instead of trying to make a mockery out of it.

Life is a series of adjustments and we as Malaysians ought to show some respect to the faith and principles of others especially like the taxi driver you are writing about here.

Malaysians must learn to treasure our good citizens like the taxi driver here instead of poking fun at such a good example.

I am sure that you appreciate decent behavior as well.

We aren't exactly saints but we don't have to be devils either.

Cheers.

The poor guy is probably just uncomfortable with having passengers making out in the back seat. He is after all, a Pak Haji. Show him some respect juga lah. I'm sure even as honeymooners, they can keep their hands to themselves for 1/2hr-1hr (depending on traffic conditions).

this due to youngster's / teenager who actually who have no place or not enough money to rent a room to be let's say intimate. so they do it in the taxi. this came out in the thrashy tabloid Malay Mail some months back.
you should have one on your kayaks! hehehehehe..u never know those kuai low from overseas!
I think I respect the Haji for standing up for his principle.
How I wish we can have those kind of sign for us Christian people in America, sigh. We will be called narrow minded etc etc...
Glad that Malaysia still have the liberty to practice on strong moral principle.
Jamy
For whatever reasons; deteriorating of malaysian's moral or increased intolerance of the muslim, we ( i mean malaysia ) have been "infamously" known among other countries for having such sensitivity.
Believe me, because when Malaysia was celebrating its 50th birthday, some said its actually a turning back of the moral clock.

I think I would consider it a matter of basic good taste and decency. A simple kiss is one thing. Involved fondling in a public place is quite different, and if I were a taxi driver I wouldn't want to deal with it, either.

But why would a sticker like that even be considered necessary?

Oh, and just a point of reference:

Even married couples aren't allowed to fornicate

Especially because it would be impossible! The word "fornicate" means to have sex before marriage. When married people have sex, it's called simply "having sex" unless one or both partners are married to someone else. Then it becomes "adultery".

But I understand what you mean, and I can appreciate the sentiment.
The Pak Haji has every right to kick out passengers who behave inappropriately. Other than that, I see no point in putting the sticker in his taxi & having such a sticker doesn't mean we are all saints.
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Hey Serenity, maybe he's too embarassed to interrupt them and kick them out. Haha. Or maybe they're so engrossed in what they're doing that they didn't hear him at all.
